Dr. Herriman began studying electrical engineering at Rice University, followed by medicine at Baylor College of Medicine and pathology training at UCSF. Neural networks were her top avocation at this time, so when serendipity brought her in contact with a New York start-up using neural networks to analyze Pap smears, the entrepreneurial bug bit and she moved across the country to join Neuromedical Systems, Inc. (NSIX). The next seven years provided her a priceless education in building businesses, commercializing medical software that uses neural networks, marketing to multiple audiences with different incentives, and competing with other ventures.

Dr. Herriman was the Chief Medical Officer of NSIX, which raised $100M in an IPO in 1997. NSIX was the first company to receive FDA PMA approval for a neural network device. Dr. Herriman will focus her discussion on her NSIX experiences.
