Oral Delivery of Biologics
Biological products are often the best means to treat a variety of diseases and conditions that would otherwise lack effective treatments. However, oral delivery is the preferred route of administration. Delivering biologics orally is challenging due to the physical and chemical properties of the gastrointestinal tract that make absorption difficult. To circumvent this challenge, Samir Mitragotri's Laboratory for Drug Delivery, with support from the Blavatnik Biomedical Accelerator, has developed a platform technology to deliver oral biologics systemically. The core technology leverages Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) ingredients that enable stabilization of biologics and enhance permeation across the intestinal epithelium. Studies in rodents have demonstrated the platform’s efficacy for oral delivery of insulin with high bioavailability and favorable pharmacodynamics. A startup emerging from this lab intends to use the technology to commercialize a wide range of therapeutic biologics.
