Kevin Bitterman Kicks off New Alumni Speakers Series
The transition from academic training to industry can be daunting, and listening to someone who has been there can help. On June 25, OTD launched the latest addition to their Speakers Series “Pathways to Entrepreneurship” to help educate and inspire young researchers with stories of alumni who now work in industry. Kevin Bitterman, PhD ’04, kicked things off by sharing the story of his personal journey from HMS grad student to Sirtris, Polaris, and Editas.
Kevin discussed the challenges involved in undertaking entrepreneurial endeavors, but encouraged attendees that the qualities fostered during training as a bench scientist translated to positive assets in the public sector. His advice to trainees was to create options for themselves, not to be daunted by an area they know little about, and to take advantage of the small community – to make connections, talk, and learn. The discussion was followed by a reception to allow Harvard innovators the chance to network and explore opportunities.
On September 30, OTD will host Alexis Borisy, Partner at Third Rock Ventures for the second installment of “Pathways.” Alexis will share his personal from training at Stuart Schreiber's CCB lab to his transition to the biotechnology industry.
