Biomedical Informatics Entrepreneurs Salon: Ann DeWitt, The Engine

Ann DeWitt is a General Partner at Engine Ventures. She serves as a Board Member for Cellino, Kano Therapeutics, Kytopen, Lucy Therapeutics, Quaise, Syzygy Plasmonics, and Vaxess Technologies.

Ann was most recently at Sanofi where she held senior roles in business development and strategic venture investment. Prior to Sanofi, she was at Flagship Pioneering. Ann started her career in R&D at 3M Company, working across fields of materials, biology and engineering. Ann holds an MBA from Harvard and a PhD in Chemical Engineering from MIT. She served on the Board of Women in the Enterprise of Science and Technology and is on the Life Science Council of Springboard Enterprises. She serves as a Key Advisory Board member of Harvard’s Blavatnik Fellowship in Life Science Entrepreneurship, she is a member of Investment Advisory Committee for Prime Coalition and she serves on the Board of Directors of Nucleate.

In this talk, we will explore Ann’s career trajectory, get her perspective on startup formation in the life sciences and learn more about the investment climate for early-stage companies.

Ann is a General Partner at The Engine. Ann joined The Engine in 2018. She serves as a board member for Cellino, Lucy Therapeutics, Quaise Energy, Syzygy Plasmonics, Vaxess Technologies, Kano Therapeutics, and Kytopen.

After receiving her PhD from MIT in chemical engineering in 2001, Ann started her full-time career at 3M Company. Working at global headquarters, she reported to Corporate Scientists, was part of an executive mentorship program that exposed her to multiple businesses, and worked on projects across chemistry, engineering, and materials during her 5+ years at the company. After 3M, she earned her MBA from Harvard Business School and joined Flagship Ventures (now Flagship Pioneering).

Before joining The Engine in 2018, Ann spent 4+ years in corporate business development and strategic venture investment at Sanofi-Genzyme. While at Sanofi, she experienced both big pharma (Sanofi) as well as big biotech (Genzyme), including the challenges and opportunities of integrating these two sets of resources, people, and processes.

Ann holds an MBA from Harvard and a PhD in Chemical Engineering from MIT. She served on the Board of Women in the Enterprise of Science and Technology and is on the Life Science Council of Springboard Enterprises. She is a member of the Investment Advisory Committee for Prime Coalition and serves as a Key Advisory Board member of Harvard’s Blavatnik Fellowship in Life Science Entrepreneurship.

Sam Liss.

Sam leads OTD efforts to develop strategic research collaborations in engineering and the physical sciences, while also helping commercialize technologies in robotics, computer science, medical devices and a range of other areas. Prior to Harvard, Sam served in a variety of business-facing roles at two venture capital-backed startups and was Vice President of Corporate Marketing at Dialogic Corporation, which was later acquired by Intel. He was also a management consultant at Booz, Allen & Hamilton, advising clients in the software, semiconductor and electronics sectors. Sam holds an MBA from Columbia University and a BS in electrical engineering from Syracuse University.
