OTD engages with Harvard researchers throughout the entire commercialization process, from disclosing a new innovation to venture creation and support. Your primary point of contact in OTD will be a member of our business development team, whose technical and industry experience aligns with your research.
Disclosure & Evaluation
Submit your invention through our Report of Innovation (ROI) form. Our team evaluates the innovation’s commercial potential, patentability, and market opportunity. Submit your ROI before any public disclosure (paper, talk, poster). Our team will respond within 2 business days.
IP Protection Strategy
We work with patent counsel to develop and file patent applications, ensuring your innovation is properly protected. Our team will provide biweekly updates.
Funding & De‑risking Support
We help innovators bridge the gap between academic discovery and commercial potential through internal translational funds and industry collaborations. OTD generally drafts a sponsored research agreement within 5 business days of receiving all necessary and pertinent information.
Market Development
The OTD team works with the research team to develop a business development strategy and identify potential licensees, partners, or startup opportunities. This support is ongoing throughout the commercialization process.
Negotiation & Deal-Structuring
We negotiate licensing agreements with existing companies or newly launched startups, ensuring terms that benefit both the advancement of the innovation and the inventors. Licensing Harvard innovations can range from OTD’s ExpressPath licenses to custom tailor-made licenses.
Ongoing Relationship and Revenue Sharing
After a license is signed, OTD continues to support the ongoing development and market success of the innovation. Royalties and other income are distributed according to Harvard’s policy, supporting inventors and future discoveries.
