A New Electrochemical Method of CO2 Capture

There are increasing efforts worldwide to reduce reliance on fossil fuel-based energy. However, in parallel, other approaches are urgently required to deal with the problem of rising CO2 emissions.

This invention “A New Electrochemical Method of CO2 Capture” offers a new electrochemically mediated CO2 separation approach, based on small organic molecules, that uses large changes in solution pH to absorb and release CO2. This invention requires electrical but no thermal energy input and is a promising candidate for carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) from flue gas or direct air capture. The energetic costs for this invented scheme are less than or equal to the theoretical values for all thermal and electrochemical CO2 capture cycles, currently available.
